Went away over the weekend and tried to start a game of Fortress America that a friend had bought for $2 from an op shop. Looked like it was some sort of amazing Risk variant, and we had lots of fun sorting out all of the units (infantry, APCs, hovertanks, helicopters, bombers...) and lining them up (many OCD tendencies were exhibited).
Then we opened the manual, and read the background to the game. OK, so it's a 1980s cold war/energy crisis/USA builds solar satellites + hidden lasers/the world gets upset and decides to attack... cool scenario, sounding promising.
So how do we play it? Um, ok, so the next 20-30 pages of the manual try to explain that...
Long story short, 30 minutes later we packed up the game without having even made a first move (mainly because we couldn't really figure out how the moves even worked). There's probably someone on here who has played it and finds it easy, but for four novices it was just much too hard.
