I’ve put some more hours into this. The game is good. Not great, but good. If you are thinking about it or tight on money, then wait.
It is more of the same in terms of how ME games were played. Start with a small crew, explore a little, double your crew after the first planet or so. Relationships with your crew can be grown or not. Totally up to you.
Fighting seems more realistic than previous games. Getting hit hurts. A lot. But the AI is pretty much still the same. Enemies will stay in cover, pop up to fire, only to be hit in the face with your own bullets. Heavy enemies or those with shields will suicide charge you and don’t start me on their flanking tactics. All very predictable.
Building weapons and armor sucks. It is the worst part of the game. There are almost too many weapons to pick from with no real difference in them. Blueprints stay in your blueprints section even after you have crafted the weapon. This is all to do with the fact you can choose to add augmentation slots or not when you build them. They really should drop out and you should just be able to modify a weapon once it is built. It gets really confusing. You also need to research levels inside of the weapon itself. It really feels like an unnecessary part to the game. Worst of all, you cannot arm your crew. Weapons or armor. Which makes finding or making gear redundant. NB I haven’t been able to do this yet, maybe you can later but its not looking like it.
Exploration of planets is similar to the last couple of ME games. Your nomad vehicle is pretty cool and can be modded with shields, paints etc. Driving is easy. The exploring for resources is a pain in the arse though. It feels like a section of the game that was added as filler. A bit like research.
The story is ok so far. NPCs are hit and miss. Addison is a bitch and I have treated her as such. Tann is a wimp. I like Kesh. A well spoken, female Krogan is a nice step away from previous Krogan encounters in past games. SAM is good. Sneaky little voice in your head and seems to have a personality.
Your crew is eclectic. Drack is my favourite. Had some pretty funny banter when I’ve had him and PeeBee as my squad mates.
TL:DR - Refer to my opening statement.
